American Indian and Alaska Native Diabetes: Critical Information for Researchers and Policy-Makers

This fact sheet describes diabetes prevalence among American Indian and Alaska Native populations, including risk factors and access to care barriers in California, the state with the largest number of AIANs. The authors also recommend key steps to ensure comprehensive and culturally appropriate interventions in affected communities.

This fact sheet uses data from the 2009 California Health Interview Survey (CHIS).   This fact sheet was developed with support from the Indian Health Service, California Area Office, in collaboration with the Native American Health Center in Oakland, United American Indian Involvement in Los Angeles, and the San Diego American Indian Health Center. ​
