California Health Interview Survey (CHIS) Data User Training: October 17

Access brand new data from the nation's largest state health survey.

The California Health Interview Survey (CHIS) released the full 2023 survey data on October 3, 2024. Now it's time to learn how to access and use it!

Join the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research as we host a data user training to demonstrate how to use CHIS' free online health query tool AskCHIS to get data on a wide range of health topics.

CHIS Data Dissemination Manager Jacob Rosalez will walk through how to:

  • Set up an account
  • Search for health statistics by county, region, and the state
  • Compare topics and look across various sociodemographic factors
  • Identify patterns and trends
  • View and export data in tables, charts, and graphs
  • …and more!

This year's release features more than 50 new topics and questions, including gambling, housing discrimination, prescription painkiller use, unintended pregnancy, access to filtered air during wildfire smoke, adolescent college plans, adolescent sexual orientation, and child gender identity.

Rosalez will also demonstrate how to use AskCHIS™ Neighborhood Edition (NE), which provides select health estimates at more granular levels of geography: census tract, ZIP code, city, county, and legislative district levels. Learn how to produce tables, thematic maps, and bar charts for easy visualization.

Whether you're a legislator in need of reliable data to inform policy, a community organization advocating for better health care access, a researcher studying disparities among Asian subgroups, a journalist working on a story on mental health among Californians, or a concerned citizen, CHIS will provide the training that puts evidence at your fingertips.
