2024 E.R. Brown Symposium

The UCLA Center for Health Policy Research (CHPR) invites you to a research symposium highlighting the innovations and impact that have made CHPR one of the nation’s leading health policy research centers and to envision the future of health policy through advances in research, evaluation, and community engagement.

In celebration of our 30th anniversary, this year’s E.R. Brown Symposium will feature panels and presentations with CHPR researchers, faculty, and staff. Come hear about the CHPR's:

  • Exciting new projects advancing equity locally with the Health Equity Challenge and nationally through our Data Equity Center.
  • Innovations in survey science and our constantly evolving and award-winning California Health Interview Survey (CHIS).
  • Expertise in evaluating the impact of federal programs, statewide demonstrations, local initiatives, environmental disasters, and state and legislative policies through our Health Economics and Evaluation Research (HEER) Program.

Keynote address
Defending the Future of Health Policy Research  
Dr. Aaron Carroll, President and CEO, AcademyHealth

Dr. Aaron Carroll is a nationally recognized thought leader, pediatrician, health services researcher, and a New York Times contributor. As president and CEO of AcademyHealth, he directs the leading national organization for health services researchers, policymakers, and health care practitioners and stakeholders that works to increase the understanding of methods and data used in the field. He is also the author of several books, including “The Bad Food Bible.”

The event will kick off with a welcome by UCLA CHPR Director Ninez A. Ponce, PhD, MPP, followed by a special message from Ritu Sadana, ScD, head of ageing and health at the World Health Organization ‍(WHO). 

The event is free and open to the public. Registration is required. Register by Monday, October 21. If you have not registered in time and would like to attend, email us.

The E.R. Brown Symposium, named after UCLA CHPR founder E. Richard "Rick" Brown, is an annual event that honors the life of Rick Brown, who spent his life building evidence and advocating for a health-care-for-all system and improving social factors that assure equitable opportunities for people to achieve the best health possible.

Director, UCLA Center for Health Policy Research
Ninez A. Ponce, PhD, MPP, is director of the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research and Professor and Wasserman Endowed Chair in the Department of Health Policy and Management at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health. She leads the California Health Interview Survey and champions better data on communities of color, better care for overlooked groups, and more.

Dr. Aaron E. Carroll is President and CEO of AcademyHealth. A nationally recognized thought leader, science communicator, pediatrician, and health services researcher, he is a passionate advocate for the creation and use of evidence to improve health and health care for all.

Ritu Sadana, ScD
Head, Ageing and Health, World Health Organization (WHO)

Ritu Sadana led the research and writing of the World Health Organization’s Decade of Healthy Ageing: baseline report, coordinated the development of the first WHO Global Strategy on Ageing and Health, including conceiving the objective towards the UN Decade of Healthy Ageing 2021-2030, and co-authored the WHO World Report on Ageing and Health.

Nadereh Pourat, PhD, is associate center director at UCLA CHPR, director of the Health Economics and Evaluation Research Program, and a professor at UCLA FSPH. She is an evaluations expert of national, state, and local health programs.

Director, California Health Interview Survey (CHIS)
Todd Hughes is the California Health Interview Survey (CHIS) director. He oversees data collection, survey research projects, and vendor management. Previously, he was the assistant division chief of the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey.
Kathryn Kietzman, PhD, MSW
Director, Health Equity Program
Kathryn G. Kietzman, PhD, MSW, is the director of the Health Equity Program and senior research scientist at UCLA CHPR and a UCLA FSPH associate researcher. She studies long-term health and social care needs of older adults and people with disabilities who rely on public programs.
Susan Babey, PhD
Director of Research
Susan H. Babey, PhD, is the director of research, director of the Chronic Disease Research Program, and a senior research scientist at UCLA CHPR. She focuses on the prevention of chronic health conditions and social and environmental determinants of health.
AJ Scheitler, EdD
Director of Development, Engagement, and Strategic Planning
AJ Scheitler, EdD, is the director of development, engagement, and strategic planning, and coordinator of the National Network of State and Local Health Surveys. She manages development activities, funder relationships, and several programs at UCLA CHPR.

Garen Corbett, MA, is the director of the California Health Benefits Review Program (CHBRP). CHBRP provides independent, rigorous, and evidence-based analysis of pending health legislation for the California Legislature.

Royce Park is the assistant director of survey planning and operations for the California Health Interview Survey (CHIS) at the UCLA CHPR. Park supervises the design, implementation, operations, and dissemination of CHIS findings.

Jacob Rosalez is a senior public administration analyst at UCLA CHPR. He oversees online dissemination tools powered by California Health Interview Survey data, including AskCHIS, AskCHIS Neighborhood Edition, and Health Profiles.
