Majority of LA rental units remain unprotected from secondhand smoke despite HUD ruling

Renters living in approximately 780,000 privately owned rental units remain unprotected from secondhand smoke in the city of Los Angeles, despite the U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announcement that public housing developments in the U.S. will be required to provide a smoke-free environment for their residents.

Nearly one million California children still at risk of secondhand smoke exposure

New study finds that African-American, low-income children at risk. A sample size miscalculation in the original version of this publication resulted in errors to the estimated number of children affected by secondhand smoke, although the percentages, interpretation and findings remain correct. The errors were related to pooling three cycles of CHIS data.  The Center regrets the error.
