Two special sessions also focus on ACA and undocumented immigrants and California’s burgeoning senior population
The life and legacy of the Center’s late founding director E. Richard Brown will be celebrated at a special event at the upcoming American Public Health Association conference in San Francisco.
The event will commemorate Brown’s significant contributions to the national fields of public health and health policy. Brown was a past president of APHA. Speakers include state Sen. Loni Hancock (D-Oakland); Kim Belshé, former secretary of the California Health and Human Services Agency; Ninez Ponce, principal investigator of the California Health Interview Survey; Marianne Brown and others. There will also be a special video tribute by U.S. Sen. Al Franken, who consulted Brown for the professor’s expertise on health care reform. Learn more about the event here. In all, APHA will feature nearly 50 presentations featuring Center researchers or California Health Interview Survey (CHIS) data, on topics ranging from lesbian/gay/bisexual data in CHIS to the effectiveness of calorie listings at fast food restaurants, to the impact of pollutant exposure on low-income adults and children. See all presentations here. Two special sessions at APHA will also spotlight Center research and experts. The first special session featuring Center research will focus on the exclusion of an estimated 11.2 million undocumented immigrants from the Affordable Care Act. Center researchers will discuss the impact of this exclusion, which may result in higher costs of health care and more health problems for undocumented immigrants. Learn more about “The Affordable Care Act Implementation: Implications for Immigrant and Refugee.” At a second featured session led by Steven P. Wallace, the Center’s associate director, researchers will discuss whether California is prepared to meet the challenges of a burgeoning, diverse senior population. In California, the senior population will double to nearly 8 million by 2026 and Latinos will comprise the largest group of older adults by mid-century. Learn more about “Golden Years in the Golden State.” APHA, taking place Oct. 27 – 31, attracts more than 13,000 public health professionals – the largest gathering in the nation – and provides a first look at new research by leaders in the field.
